Our current show, BARAKAT: The Gift, curated by the very talented Gaia Serena Semionati, was featured yesterday on DNAinfo. A group show featuring Contemporary Art from the Middle East and North Africa, it has been generating quite a response (see for example comments to the article!).

If you haven't had the chance to see this exciting exhibition yet, then do try to make it over before it closes this Saturday, September 11th.

Meanwhile, we hope to see you next week, September 16, 6pm - 8pm for the opening reception of James Busby White and Black: New Minimal Paintings in the main gallery and Ruud van Empel Generations: New Photographs.

Dean Monogenis at Pace University

This summer, STUX artist Dean Monogenis was an Art-in-Residence at the Pace University - Dyson College of Arts and Sciences. There Monogenis worked on a large-scale installation pairing landscape with the abstract to create a three-dimensional painting that organically grows out of its space.

“I wanted to bring that into sculpture and I wanted to also incorporate the environment that the sculpture will be in.” Monogenis explained.

The installation, titled Monument to Ascent, brings the walls, floor, and ceiling into the art.

Margaret Evangeline on the BBC

As part of the DRIFT exhibition in London which ran September - October, 2008, Margaret Evangeline was interviewed by the BBC about her installation Saved From Drowning- Monumental Reflective Project, on the River Thames directly across from the Tate Modern.

"I recalled the way JM Turner marshals forces of nature, especially water, as I selected a dramatic spot on the Thames near the place of the tragic sinking of a pleasure boat, the Marchioness, August 20, 1989, to construct a giant reflective surface of stainless steel that becomes the perpetually changing painting entitled Saved From Drowning," states Evangeline.

Saved From Drowning is a double-sided six-ton polished stainless steel structure whose two opposite sides are to be viewed randomly and intermittently. Fifteen feet high, thirty feet wide with a thickness of one foot the obverse and reverse sides are assembled from twelve polished stainless steel panels welded onto a steel chassis, a massive infrastructure stabilized by four braided stainless steel guide wires. This form is engineered to sit on top of a specially outfitted pontoon barge with maximum.

Shimon Okshteyn in the Village Voice: "Chelsea Gallery Shows Quite a Piece!"

Who says art is strictly for old ussies? It can be very frothy stuff, like this Shimon Okshteyn "fiberglass with marble dust" sculpture of a man jerking off his giant tool. I caught it on a high-minded jaunt to the Stefan Stux gallery the other night, so I gamely posed with it (captured by Brian Cummings), anxious to interact with a piece of art that's THAT good. I even got to meet the artist, who admitted without prompting that he's totally the basis for the sculpture. "Hmm, nice dick," I remarked with my usual intellectual appreciation, slyly glancing downwards. He half smiled. And somehow the art world will never be the same.

PS: They really need to change the work's official dimensions, which are described as "39 X 38 X 29 inches." Aren't they leaving out 7 1/2 inches?

Reflections of Reality-Shimon Okshteyn

Shimon Okshteyn’s new solo exhibition Reflections of Reality, opened on Friday, October 10th, 2008 at the Heist Gallery, LES.

STUX Gallery directors, Stefan Stux and Andrea Schnabl were in attendance at the opening with Okshteyn’s entourage as well as the young owner Talia Eisenberg of the HEIST gallery.

For this ground breaking exhibition Okshteyn covered the gallery’s interior with his work, including mirrors to reflect “the jarring fragmentation of contemporary life … and to incorporate the viewer into the work, combining the subject with the object”.

Reflections of Reality will be on view, October 11th – November 7th, 2008.

After Party

Aaron Johnson’s new solo exhibition Star-Crossed opened on September 4th, 2008 at the STUX Gallery.

Such well-known individuals as fashion designer Horst, artist Wei Dong, and the Art and Auction Team were there to support the exhibition. At the after party, which amusingly took place at the Mason Dixon Country and Western Bar, located in the Lower East Side, guests were able to show off their thighs of steel on Mason Dixon’s mechanical bull.

All guests were astounded by Johnsons’s time of nearly a full minute on the mechanical bull before being thrown off.

New York Youth at Risk

STUX Gallery was thrilled to host an informational gathering in August of 2008 on behalf of non-for-profit organization, New York Youth at Risk (NYYAR).

The foundation, begun in 1985, through persistent and compassionate mentoring, transforms the lives of at-risk disadvantaged children and youths. The amazing and effective influence, which NYYAR has had, is self-evident.

Member of the board, Alex Blackwell gave a moving and informative presentation on his organization which the audience clearly received enthusiastically. A local Caribbean band performed and a youth from the organization showed off her modern/ballet dance skills. The evening had a very positive tone. Ivan Stux, private investment banker with his own firm Stux Capital, and brother of Stefan Stux, is also proudly a board member at NYYAR. The already successful organization is looking at how they might expand their diverse areas of involvement in the community through partnerships with similar organizations as well as to gain sponsors who share their transcendental vision for New York’s youth.

As the organization’s motto states, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has”.

Aaron Johnson at Bric Rotunda

Aaron Johnson seminal piece, “Old Uncle One-Eye Sam the Bald Eagle Slayer”, 2005 was featured among others at the Bric Rotunda Gallery, Brooklyn, NY from July 2 – August 8, 2008 in the group exhibition, Grotesque Histories.

Grotesque Histories presents the work of three artists — Enrique Chagoya, Aaron Johnson, and Miguel Luciano — who deploy iconography's based in history, both ancient and recent, to address the current world condition. Each artist projects a distinct visual style, but all draw upon grotesque visual forms to express pointed, often passionate statements about recent history and political memory. Relying on recognizable allusions to activate the collective consciousness of their audiences, these artists reconstruct identifiable signs of popular culture and mass media to draw attention to the absurdities of history, politics, religion, and society.
